Increasingly you will hear web-developers talk about Search engine Optimization. Like the name suggests it is a way of optimizing your website to make it easier to be found when using search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing etc). These search engines have become a backbone and the most usefully tool when using the internet. It is no wonder, with the amount of traffic Google alone gets, that it is one of the largest and most valuable companies in the world, worth more than 200 Billion dollars.
But how do you optimize your website using SEO?
To explain this we must first look at the different components of SEO and then conclude to wrap them all together.
H1 Tags
These are the large blue titles that can be seen when using google. These give a very short description about that the page is or simply the company name. H1 Tags aren’t necessarily the most optimizable component of SEO. If your H1 tag is your company name and contains words also mentioned in keywords and meta-descriptions it should traditionally be fine. Providing you have a clear H1 tag that states what your company name is or what the page is about this element should be fine. There have been several tests which have determined that when you effectively use other components of SEO that providing you have a good database of key words and meta-descriptions (we will get to those later), there isn’t much to gain by spending a lot of money on H1 tags.
Keywords are the one of the most important components when optimizing your web-location with search engines. They are also the element of SEO that most experts provide services in. SEO Keywords are entered in the backend of your website and they tell search engines what your page is about. They do this by using keywords and phrases. Once you have typed in these keywords the website will send them to google when someone makes a search request. Let’s say you offer coaching services, then people will most likely google phrases like ‘ looking for a coach’ or ‘coach finder’. Then if we enter in our SEO keyword editor these phrases as well as other words like ‘coach’ and ‘select your coach’ google will know that we offer consumers coaching sessions. This means that google will present our website when someone googles for these phrases. Naturally if two websites have the same keyword google will look at other factors to determine who is listed higher. These factors are mainly down to keyword density, back linking(explained later) and page hits. As a result more popular pages are, obviously, ranked higher. If you have a large list of keywords you have more options of being presented by search engines.
Keyword density
Keyword density is simply how many times, on different pages of your company websites, your relevant keywords are displayed. If you have certain keywords on every page Search engines will factor this in when deciding in what position you are ranked when someone searches for this keyword of phrase. The best example we can give is Let’s say that we have the same page viewing and back linking as the official ISO Website. If this is the case when someone types in ISO in theory there would be no difference between us. However because the ISO website as that keyword on every page and we only have in on certain pages the ISO website will be present above us. This is because a search engine and its algorithm will determine what is most relevant to that persons search assignment and as it cannot think like a human, it must use keywords and factors within that to determine who is ranked where.
Meta Descriptions
Meta descriptions are the visible more in detail descriptions of your website. When using google they can be seen under the H1 tag. Feel free to Google something and see what we are talking about. Meta-descriptions tend to work together with keywords in telling google what the page is about. If we look at the page of ADR Register we see that the meta-description says that ADR Register is THE independent register for E.T.C. If you google ‘ADR Register’ you will also see if you look carefully you will see that ADR Register is highlighted and looks different than other words. This is because google has linked your search assignment of ADR Register to the fact that that we have placed that in our meta description. Having a clear meta description relevant to the page that you want people to view can be vital in ranking higher up search engines rankings.
In our markets, coaching, hypnotherapy, ADR and the martime sector there are multiple organizations that offer either directorial listings, some form of accreditation etc. This results in an extremely competitive atmosphere among certain keywords. This is why we rely on our practitioners to place the Logo of our registers and the web-link of their applicable register. Let’s take for example an EMCI Practitioner. If they link EMCI Register on their website search engines will see that and will process that EMCI has more people acknowledging the Register. This is the most powerful single tool to boost your Search engine rankings. If you have thousands of Backlinks you will be ranked higher on every keyword that you enter. In essence back linking provides support for keywords and meta descriptions to do their job.
If you add all of these together you have, in basics, the concept of search engine optimization. However, don’t be fooled in people telling you that seo will be an easily achievable, one shot instant money maker. It isn’t. If you want to optimize you SEO keywords you need to spend time (not a lot) every couple of weeks to re update and re-evaluate what you SEO’s look like. Also browse online guides to see if search engines have introduced a new search algorithm and how you can edit you seo to that. It is a lot of work but the rewards are beneficial. A higher ranking means that you will be easily found and people will see your business name more frequently. Enhancing your profile.
